Have you ever wondered why you can be completely absorbed in a game for hours, yet struggle to maintain focus during a study session? For decades, educators and scientists have sought to harness the captivating power of games. Now, a new discovery from the Faculty of Education, The University of Hong Kong is shedding light on the brain's hidden mechanisms behind this phenomenon.
Everyone may know what “plagiarism” is, but Dr Li Yongyan has looked further into understanding Chinese conceptualisations of “plagiarism” from a historical perspective, and has explored how intertextual education has been conducted in schools in Hong Kong and mainland China.
A mounting number of PhD students and graduates face increasingly constrained academic labour markets. Dr Hugo Horta, Associate Professor of the Faculty's Academic Unit of Social Contexts and Policies of Education, is conducting some research to assess the experiences, motivations and intended career trajectories of PhD students in Greater China and beyond.
Professor David Carless is a pioneer in feedback literacy, particularly at the tertiary level. His efforts recently earned him a Humanities and Social Sciences Prestigious Fellowship from the University Grants Council to further his research and a Teaching Development Grant to consider how to apply his findings at HKU.
Dr Peter Cobb and Dr Juuso Nieminen deployed extended reality to help students walk through the sites that no longer exist and discuss their observations through avatars through a Teaching Development Grant.
Dr Chen Gaowei developed a new tool called Classroom Discourse Analyser (CDA), a video-visualisation software that can visualise teachers' and students' engagement and help in-service teachers and student-teachers identify areas of improvement. The CDA can help by making teachers aware of just how much they are helping or hindering students in their classroom talk.
Dr Timothy Hew used gamification to motivate students and self-regulated learning by getting them to set goals and monitor and reflect on their learning.
Describing scenery and situations is a common topic in Chinese writing at schools. However, how can students describe places more concretely without having visited them before? This is where technology plays an important role, and Dr Gary Wong’s project is a brilliant example to illustrate how technology can facilitate students’ learning.
In 2016, a multi-disciplinary team led by Professor Nancy Law, Deputy Director, Centre for Information Technology in Education, embarked on a five-year longitudinal study entitled “Hong Kong Students’ Digital Citizenship Development”, with the aim of assessing digital competencies in school children.
An archaeological research programme directed by Dr Peter J. Cobb enabled students to study the past of Armenia and the Ancient Near East and to excavate an ancient fortress and other settlements, marking one of the first times a university from East Asia has taken on a significant role in a major archaeological expedition to the Ancient Near East.
