HKU Faculty of Education announces the PISA 2025
Hong Kong Findings

On September 8, 2026, the Faculty of Education at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) announced the Hong Kong findings of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2025. At the press conference, members of the PISA Project Team, Professor Frederick Leung, Professor Lam Wai Ip, Professor Nancy Law, and Professor Kennedy Chan, presented key outcomes and analyses of Hong Kong students’ performance in the assessment. 

Coordinated by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), PISA is an international assessment that measures the science, reading, and mathematics literacy of 15-year-old students. In addition to these three domains, PISA 2025 also assessed students’ competence to learn in the digital world. The 2025 results showed that Hong Kong students continued to perform above international averages in science, reading, and mathematics, while demonstrating particularly strong performance in Learning in the Digital World, an innovative domain that assesses computational problem-solving skills. 

The Project Team also highlighted the need to strengthen Hong Kong students’ future readiness and shared recommendations for fostering student agency. The press conference further featured experience-sharing by front-line educators, including Mr Albert Wong, Dr Suen Ka Chun, and Mr Dickson Ho, who reflected on the findings and their implications for student learning.

A total of 91 countries and economies participated in PISA 2025 globally. The Hong Kong component of the assessment was conducted by the HKU Faculty of Education, commissioned by the Education Bureau of the Government of the HKSAR, with 6,445 students from 230 secondary schools taking part.
