Advancing Intangible Cultural Heritage Education

From August 2 to 4, 2026, the UNESCO Chair in Comparative Education at The University of Hong Kong co-hosted an international development programme on Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Education with the International Centre for UNESCO ASPnet (ICUA). Professor Mark Bray was among the keynote speakers at the opening ceremony, held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. In his remarks, he highlighted the importance of cultural exchange and encouraged young people to play a vital role in building bridges of understanding between cultures.

The second part of the programme took place at The University of Hong Kong. It brought together educators and cultural practitioners from 21 countries across Africa, Asia, and Europe to exchange ideas and experiences on promoting ICH education. Participants engaged in discussions on cross-cultural ICH education, cross-sector partnerships, and approaches to developing communication, collaboration, and critical thinking skills. Sharing sessions showcased diverse heritage practices, including traditional performing arts, crafts, and food culture, highlighting the role of education in preserving and celebrating cultural diversity.

The programme concluded with a renewed commitment to international cooperation and continued collaboration in advancing ICH education.
