Inaugural Forum of “Education for the Countryside” Series

Education for the Countryside: Land, Labor, and Life

International Symposium on Rural Education in Western China

In 1926, renowned Chinese educator Tao Xingzhi sharply criticised the direction of rural education in China: “China’s rural education has gone down the wrong path! It teaches people to flee the countryside for the cities, to eat without growing grain, to clothe themselves without growing cotton, to build houses without planting trees. It teaches people to envy luxury and disdain agricultural labor.” Unfortunately, nearly a hundred years later, rural education continues to be urban-oriented. It is alienated from the social and economic development of the countryside and runs counter to the trend of revitalisation in rural areas. Rural education today faces urgent challenges. It must reorient its relationship with rural society, to better serve the sustainable development of the countryside.

To reverse the urban orientation and promote education to serve rural revitalisation, Faculty of Education at The University of Hong Kong (HKU), with the support of the Tin Ka Ping Foundation, launches the series of international forums on “Education for the Countryside”. The series of forums will be organised by HKU Faculty of Education in close collaboration with leading normal universities in mainland China. The forum series aims to borrow international and domestic research and practices to seek new ways forward for rural education to serve sustainable development of the countryside.

The inaugural forum with the theme “Education for the Countryside: Land, Labor, and Life” will be co-organised by HKU Faculty of Education and Northwest Normal University in China. This forum calls for a fundamental shift of aims in rural education from social mobility to the cultivation of rural contributors culturally, economically and socially. It features keynote speeches, panel sessions, principal dialogues, and roundtable discussions.

教育為農：生根·生產·生活

暨中國西部農村教育國際研討會

早在1926年，中國著名教育家陶行知先生就曾敏銳地指出「中國鄉村教育走錯了路！他教人離開鄉下向城裡跑；他教人吃飯不種稻，穿衣不種棉，蓋房子不造林。他教人羡慕奢華，看不起務農。」遺憾的是，在近百年後的今天，農村教育仍然面向城市，背離鄉土，與農村的社會經濟發展格格不入，與鄉村振興的浪潮背道而馳。農村教育面臨急迫的挑戰，需要重新定位與鄉村社會的關係，以服務於農村的可持續發展。

農村教育研究往往注重機會平等的問題，而鮮少從農村社區發展的角度考察教育。為了扭轉農村教育的向城傾向，推動教育服務於農村的文化、經濟、和社會發展，香港大學教育學院與西北師範大學教育科學學院發起「教育為農」系列論壇。本系列論壇得到田家炳基金會資助，由香港大學教育學院牽頭，與內地師範院校緊密合作，目的在於借鑒國際及國內前沿研究和實踐，探索農村教育促進鄉村可持續發展的創新道路。

首屆論壇由香港大學教育學院與西北師範大學教育科學學院聯合舉辦，主題為「教育為農：生根·生產·生活」，倡議農村教育應以「育人生根、鄉村生產、幸福生活」為目標，設有主題報告、平行論壇、校長論壇以及圓桌討論。
