HKU e360 (2022) study finds new insights on key factors impacting students’ wellbeing and schools’ online teaching and calls for collaboration to establish a Digital New Normal

A press conference on the “eCitizen Education 360 (2022)” study was held on March 30, 2023, in which the final research findings were released.

Based on the previous “eCitizen Education 360” study which started in 2020, this latest research study was carried out by a team of HKU researchers led by Principal Investigator, Dr Cheng Yong Tan, and Co-Investigators, Professor Nancy Law and Professor Catherine K.K. Chan, all from the Faculty.

During the press conference, Professor Law reported the final batch of findings of the “eCitizen Education 360 (2022)” study, which elucidated the key risks and key facilitating effects (including self-regulated learning strategies, digital literacy, and cognitive emotional regulation strategies) on students’ wellbeing, complementary effects of different aspects of parenting on students' wellbeing, and schools’ technology usage and positive climate for teachers’ online teaching self-efficacy. The first batch of findings of this study were released in November 2022.

After the dissemination of the research findings, several respondents from the education sector (primary and secondary school principals and the Associate Dean of a local university) expressed their views on the research findings from the perspectives of schools, teachers and parents. They also shared their schools’ practices and experiences of the use of digital technologies and the support they provided to their teachers.

The participating media representatives raised perceptive questions about ways to minimise cyberbulling, how parents can maintain close communication via digital technologies, as well as various parenting issues. Professor Law provided comprehensive answers and some practical suggestions to address the questions.
