Knowledge Exchange Seminar – “Leading the Future: Utilising Generative Artificial Intelligence-Powered Strategies to Pioneer a New Landscape in Chinese Writing Education”

A Knowledge Exchange Seminar on the captioned topic was held on June 15, 2024 (Saturday). The seminar aimed to introduce the design concept and diverse features of the “mAI Mind Chinese Writing Assessment System” (abbreviated as mAI Mind) developed by a research team from the Faculty, and to showcase how this artificial intelligence tool could improve the learning and teaching of Chinese writing.

In the opening remarks, Professor Yang Rui, Dean of Education, emphasised the synergistic relationship between technology and education, highlighting its potential to greatly enhance the learning experience and effectively engage students. He also pointed out the importance of preserving the rich heritage of Chinese culture, including Chinese writing, within the context of education.

During the event, teachers and students from three pilot schools shared their first-hand experiences of using the system to facilitate teaching and learning. They also discussed the effectiveness of the system in addressing writing difficulties and presented their school-based teaching designs that promote students’ learning outcomes. Professor Elizabeth Loh, the Project Leader of mAI Mind, illustrated that the tool improved students' writing attitudes and motivation, leading to long-term enhancement of their writing abilities.

More than 200 attendees, including representatives from the Education Bureau of the HKSAR Government, principals and teachers from local secondary and primary schools, along with other community stakeholders, participated in this collaborative event. Their engagement underscores the shared commitment to advancing Chinese language education in Hong Kong.
