Experiential Learning
Financial Education in Hong Kong (PGDE-PT)
Background of Community Partner
Financial Education Centre (FEC), Hong Kong Family Welfare Society (HKFWS), is a charitable non-governmental social welfare organisation established in 1949. We aim to deliver quality and professional social services to enhance the well-being of families and individuals in Hong Kong to foster a caring community. We have been providing services including integrated family services, integrated children and youth services, elderly and community support services, child care services and other specialised services.
Since 2007, the project ‘Financial Literacy Project for Children and Youth’ has been launched and delivered different financial education programmes to various schools. In 2017, we established the Financial Education Centre in Lai Chi Kok to root ourselves in the community. FEC is designed to promote the financial literacy of children, youth, parents and the elderly through experiential activities, edutainment programmes and social media platforms to reach different social strata in society.
Project Objectives
Our centre is supported by various renowned funders such as The Community Chest of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Jockey Club and Hang Seng Bank, etc. The projects aim to:
- Enhance the awareness of the importance of financial literacy in the community.
- Enhance the financial well-being of the younger generation, as well as their parents, in primary, secondary and tertiary levels.
- Develop the Financial Social Work model in the social welfare sector, from financial education to clinical intervention in Hong Kong. Since the project focuses on developing students’ attitudes and behaviours of financial management from childhood, FEC service targets are mainly primary/secondary school students and their parents.
Work Details
- Develop and carry out (subject to school registration) a 30-45 minute student seminar. The content should cover financial management values, knowledge, and skills. The session is expected to be done individually, with attractive, innovative and interactive content.
- Set online quizzes for secondary school students, focusing on different financial aspects of Hong Kong.
- Assist FEC social workers in organising programmes in the forms of experiential games, parent-child interactive challenges and groups.
HKU students are expected to complete task 1 individually and collaborate to complete tasks 2 and 3.
