Lecture (4:45 pm - 5:45 pm)

Comparative Education: Traditions, Applications, and the Role of HKU

  • Chaired by Yang Rui, Dean of Education, HKU

The 40th anniversary of the Faculty of Education at HKU is an occasion for stocktaking and renewal of vision across fields of research, teaching and community service. This lecture will be delivered in conjunction with the annual conference of the Comparative Education Society of Hong Kong and the 30th anniversary of the Comparative Education Research Centre. The lecture will highlight aspects of HKU leadership in comparative education over decades and suggest dimensions for the agenda ahead.

Speaker:

Mark Bray holds the UNESCO Chair in Comparative Education at HKU. He was among the founding members of CERC, and its longest-serving Director (from 1996 to 2000, and from 2010 to 2018). He is also among the Past-Presidents of the CESHK as well as the US-based Comparative & International Education Society and the World Council of Comparative Education Societies. This lecture will build on one with the same title in 2004 when Professor Bray was Dean of the Faculty.

Reflections (5:45 pm - 6:30 pm)

Celebrating Three Decades of CERC: Looking Back and Looking Ahead

  • Chaired by Mark Bray

Seven past/current CERC Directors will present reflections. They are Lee Wing On, Mark Mason, Yang Rui, Liz Jackson, Anatoly Oleksiyenko, Nutsa Kobakhidze, and Jeremy Rappleye. The changing contexts, opportunities and priorities in which each Director served permits instructive comparisons across time and vision for the future.

All are welcome!
