As part of the second batch of pilot universities for the National Excellent Teacher Training Initiative (NETTI) in the Mainland, the Faculty of Education is committed to supporting the professional development of individuals who aspire to become teachers and advance their educational careers in both the Mainland and Hong Kong. Under the NETTI, the Faculty offers a comprehensive two-year full-time studies with a focus on Mathematics and STEM Education. Students enrolled under the NETTI will be integrated with those in the regular MEd and PGDE programmes, following the same regulations, syllabuses, assessment criteria, and course requirements.
First Year: Master of Education (MEd)
Students will enrol in a one-year full-time Master of Education (MEd) programme, specialising in either Mathematics Education or STEM Education. This year focuses on exploring pedagogical theories and practices. Students will develop a solid foundation in educational research methodologies and the ability to apply these skills in diverse educational settings. The MEd programme provides an academic framework that prepares students for future roles in educational leadership and innovation, ensuring their readiness for the second year of studies.
Second Year: Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE)
Upon successful completion of the MEd programme, students will proceed to a one-year full-time Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) programme in their second year. The PGDE is designed to offer comprehensive training in educational theory and practice, including professional practicum experiences in local secondary schools. It allows students to gain classroom experience and receive mentorship from experienced educators, preparing them with the skills and knowledge necessary for effective teaching.
Students who completed the MEd, specialised in Mathematics Education, will proceed to the PGDE Mathematics (Secondary) major. For students who completed the MEd, specialised in STEM Education, will proceed to the PGDE Science (Secondary) major, with options to focus on Biology, Chemistry, or Physics.
Medium of instruction: Both the MEd and PGDE programmes are conducted in English.
Recognition and Certification: Students who are admitted through the NETTI and successfully complete both the MEd and PGDE programmes will be recognised for their achievements with the award of a NETTI certificate, in addition to their MEd and PGDE qualifications. The PGDE is a teacher training qualification recognised in Hong Kong, enabling graduates to pursue teaching careers in Hong Kong. In addition, NETTI graduates are eligible for an exemption from the national primary and secondary school teacher qualification examination in the Mainland, allowing them to qualify as teachers in the Mainland as well.
