To be eligible for admission, candidates must meet both the University Admission Requirements and the Programmes Specific Requirements. All candidates shall:
- comply with the General Regulations and the Regulations for Taught Postgraduate Curricula;
- be graduates who qualify for recommendation from the pilot universities participating in the Ministry of Education’s National Excellent Teacher Training Initiative (NETTI) (具備教育部“國家優秀中小學教師培養計劃”(簡稱 “國優計劃”)試點高校推薦免試研究生資格之畢業生);
- hold a Bachelor’s degree from HKU or an equivalent qualification from another recognised institution;
- normally be expected to have completed a substantial portion of their undergraduate or postgraduate studies in Mathematics, Science, or Engineering related subjects;
- fulfil the English Language Requirements:
- for qualifications obtained outside Hong Kong where the medium of instruction is English, no additional proof of English proficiency is required;
- If the language of instruction is not English, candidates must meet one of the following English proficiency standards:
- TOEFL: Minimum score of 583 (paper-based) or 93 (internet-based)
- IELTS: Minimum overall band of 6.5 with no subtest lower than 6.0
- Grade C or above in specific English language qualifications (e.g., Overseas GCE, IGCSE, Cambridge Test of Proficiency)
[Note: Only TOEFL/IELTS scores recorded in the two years before the date of application will be considered. TOEFL Home Edition or IELTS Online are NOT accepted.]
6. participate in an interview, if shortlisted; and
7. preferably be proficient in both English and Cantonese, as the NETTI includes teaching practicums in Hong Kong schools.

Required documents for initial screening:
- Certification Letter: A formal letter certifying your eligibility for recommendation and exemption under the Ministry of Education’s National Excellent Teacher Training Initiative (NETTI). This letter must be issued by one of the pilot universities participating in the NETTI. (由國優計劃試點高校出具之推薦免試研究生資格證明文件)
- Transcript: A soft copy of your academic transcript(s), detailing your academic performance throughout your studies.
- English Proficiency Test Score: A soft copy of your English proficiency test score(s) (e.g., TOEFL, IELTS, or equivalent) to demonstrate your English language skills. This score should meet the minimum required standards as stated in point #5 above.
- Personal Statement: A written statement outlining your motivations, qualifications, and aspirations related to the NETTI.
Submission of original copies or documents is NOT required at this stage.
Application Deadline: 12:00 noon, April 25, 2025 (Friday)
Upon review and successful interview, candidates will be invited to submit a formal application.
Notes for non-local students:
Non-local students are students holding (a) a student visa/entry permit; (b) a visa/entry permit under the Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates (IANG); or (c) a dependent visa/entry permit who were 18 years old or above when they were issued with such visa/entry permit by the Director of Immigration. For details, please visit the HKSAR Immigration Department website.
Non-local students are required to obtain a student visa to study in the HKSAR with a local sponsor. All student visa applicants should request the HKU Admissions Office of the Registry to be their visa sponsor. Details on student visa application procedures can be viewed at https://www.studentvisa.hku.hk/. Please note that approximately 10 weeks should be allowed for visa processing. It is the responsibility of non-local students to make appropriate visa arrangement before they come to Hong Kong.
