We are pleased to announce that Professor Shelley Tong of the Faculty’s Academic Unit of Human Communication, Learning, and Development has won the Faculty Knowledge Exchange (KE) Award 2024.
The title of the winning project is “Reading for Understanding: Supporting Chinese-English Bilingual Reading Comprehension”. The underpinning research of this project is comprehensive and persuasive, demonstrating a robust theoretical background, profound implications, and a high level of community engagement. Assessment and remedial programmes for bilingual reading comprehension difficulties were developed to address the pressing educational issue in society. This is a meaningful project with a high degree of engagement with teachers, clinical practitioners and school-aged Chinese-English bilingual children. It helps identify children with reading comprehension difficulties. The implementation of the evidence-based reading comprehension intervention programme facilitates the improvement of reading abilities in poor comprehenders.
The Faculty KE Awards were introduced in 2011 to recognise the outstanding KE accomplishment within each Faculty that has had demonstrable economic, social or cultural impacts that benefit the community, business/industry, or partner organisations. The selection criteria include the quality of the underpinning research and the supporting evidence, the impact achieved, the effectiveness of engagement outside the academia, and a demonstration of cross- and multi-disciplinary impacts.
Our heartfelt congratulations to Professor Tong for her achievement in KE!
