Abstract:
Bridging the gap between theory and practice remains a critical challenge in educational research. “Improvement science” offers a promising framework for addressing this issue, with Lesson Study—rooted in teacher professional development traditions in China and Japan—serving as a key example. Research highlights the value of creating sharable, revisable instructional products that include annotated lesson plans, student learning artifacts, and outcome assessments through collaborative research and practice partnerships such as Lesson Study. This presentation draws on a series of studies to examine strategies for developing technology-enhanced instructional products and explores the affordances and challenges of adapting these products across diverse educational contexts.


About the speaker:
Rongjin Huang is a professor of mathematics education at Middle Tennessee State University. His research interests encompass teacher education, lesson study, classroom research, and comparative education. Dr. Huang has an extensive publication record, including over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles, eight edited books, and eight special journal issues. His edited books include Teacher Professional Learning Through Lesson Study in Virtual and Hybrid Environments: Opportunities, Challenges, and Future Directions (Routledge, 2023). Dr. Huang has served as a guest editor for the journals ZDM -  Mathematics Education and The International Journal for Lesson and Learning Studies (IJLLS).  The latest published special issue is about Developing Generative AI-Informed Pedagogies Using Lesson Study (IJLLS, 2025). Dr. Huang was a member of the International Program Committee for ICMI Study 25 on Teachers of Mathematics Working and Learning in Collaborative Groups and currently serves as a council member of the World Association of Lesson Study.
