BBED6786 Enhancing English Language Learning in China: Collaboration with Teachers in Ningbo
Project Details
This course will offer the chance for students to undertake an experiential learning project in Ningbo, China. By participating in this project, students will develop skills and knowledge in curriculum and professional development, while gaining a greater understanding of their roles as education professionals and the need as professionals to share their knowledge and skills in the wider educational community. They will also gain a deeper understanding of English teaching in China and the needs of the students there. Participants will have the chance to work alongside Mainland Chinese teachers in a primary school setting and apply the knowledge and skills that they have learned from education courses at HKU. The project is supported by The Fan Family Charitable Trust, which covers flights and accommodation for students, and is closely supervised under the guidance of Faculty members. Students’ performance in the course will be evaluated through a variety of means, including continuous assessment, online reflections, an end-of-course presentation and project sharing.

Semester 1, 2025-26 (dates to be confirmed)
- Lectures and input sessions will be held at HKU before and after the placement. The placement will take place in January 2026 at Huizhen Academy in Ningbo, China.

Eligibility
Students from the BA&BEd(LangEd)-English programme (No. of places: 10)
Funding Support
Successful applicants will receive funding support from The Fan Family Charitable Trust, which covers flights and accommodation for students. They may also explore the following financial support schemes to cover any remaining expenses:
- Madam Chu Kwai Ying Memorial Scholarship (up to HK$10,000 per application; merit-based)
- Tin Ka Ping Foundation Grant for Experiential Learning (up to HK$30,000 per application; merit-based)
- Bursary Scheme for Experiential Learning (up to HK$5,000 per application; non-merit-based).
Please note that personal expenses—such as sightseeing, social activities and additional insurance or medical plans—are not eligible for reimbursement.
Application
Register BBED6786 Enhancing English Language Learning in China: Collaboration with Teachers in Ningbo (class number to be confirmed) via the Student Information System (SIS). Students will earn 6 credits upon successful completion of the course.

Remarks
- All Experiential Learning courses offered by the Faculty of Education are graded on a PASS/FAIL basis.
- Students must possess valid travel documents to Mainland China.
- Study Abroad Programmes that are arranged by the University will be covered by the Corporate Business Travel Insurance Policy and the Group Personal Accident Insurance Policy for students. Please refer to the Finance and Enterprises Office for further information.
