Bachelor of Science in Speech and Hearing Sciences Taster Workshop

The Bachelor of Science in Speech and Hearing Sciences [BSc(Sp&HearSc)] Taster Workshop was successfully held on the HKU campus on November 4, 2021. The workshop became full soon after the registration was started, and was eventually attended by more than 50 secondary school students.

The face-to-face workshop is a new initiative, which provided us with an excellent opportunity to engage with our prospective students. As part of the event, there were a number of taster activities which those attending could take part in. Through these meaningful activities, the participants learnt about equipment like the audiometer and the otoscope, both of which are used in clinical practice. They also had a chance to prepare food for individuals with swallowing difficulties. In addition, there were some game booths about vocal hygiene education for school-age children. All the participants also visited several research labs and learnt more about the work of Speechians’ Action, an organisation run by BSc(Sp&HearSc) students.

During the event, Dr Estella Ma, Admissions Tutor of the programme, greeted the participants and answered their questions. The participants also had enthusiastic exchanges with our helpers, who are current students of the BSc(Sp&HearSc) programme.

We hope that the event offered the participants a valuable glimpse into the programme and we look forward to meeting them at HKU again soon.
