Sparks of Insights Light the Path: NIE x HKU Exchange Programme 2025-26

Jointly organised by the Faculty of Education of The University of Hong Kong and the National Institute of Education (NIE) of Singapore, the NIE x HKU Exchange Programme offers students from NIE a unique experience to develop their professional skills and attributes as future educators through a two-week school attachment in Hong Kong.

Induction at HKU

An induction workshop was held on HKU campus on 8 December 2025. Seven NIE students were warmly welcomed by Dr Leung Kin Yi Promail (Director, School-University Partnerships) and Ms Tanya Kempston (Programme Director, Postgraduate Diploma of Education), along with HKU student ambassadors who completed an international practicum at NIE in summer 2025.

School Attachment at Partner Schools
In collaboration with four partner schools – HKUGA College, Law Ting Pong Secondary School, Munsang College and Shau Kei Wan Government Secondary School – the Programme offered the participants guidance and mentorship from seasoned teachers in the schools’ welcoming and vibrant learning environments.

Through activities such as lesson observations in authentic school settings, co-teaching in science labs, attending staff meetings, assisting with marking and assessments, and participating in school events like choral speaking rehearsals, field trips and a swimming gala, participants were exposed to the diverse roles and responsibilities of teachers.

Sparks of Insights

The enriching experience has also sparked valuable insights on teaching and learning. In a debriefing session, participants shared that they gained a deeper understanding of topics as varied as comparing the education systems in Hong Kong and Singapore, tailoring instruction to meet diverse needs, scaffolding to foster confidence, nurturing higher-order thinking skills, and promoting values education and student well-being. Participants also expressed their deep gratitude for the dynamic learning experience, including the feedback from their mentors, conversations with students and educators in Hong Kong as well as the support provided by the Faculty of Education.

We trust the insights the participants gained will illuminate their paths towards becoming successful teaching professionals, empowering them to shine as both enthusiastic lifelong learners and passionate educators!

Stay tuned for more practicum opportunities offered by the School-University Partnerships Office.
