Many countries and systems, including Hong Kong, have started work on introducing AI literacy in their schools, some years before the public debut of ChatGPT 3.5 on November 30, 2022. Within a period of less than two years, well over a hundred Generative AI (GAI) products are already available on the market and the speed of development is only going to be escalating exponentially. Hong Kong launched its first AI literacy curriculum in June 2023, which unsurprisingly did not include GAI. There is no way that the traditional practice of curriculum and teacher professional development can “catch up” with the explosive speed of technology development.
The questions this raises for education are:
1. Does it matter what technology is being used for teaching AI literacy in schools?
2. How can teachers' professional development catch up with the fast technological advances?
3. What is AI literacy anyway and how can, or should, AI literacy be learnt?
This seminar draws on research in the learning sciences to address these issues.
