Background of Community Partner

 

The United Muslim Association of Hong Kong (UMAH) is a registered charity and community organisation in Hong Kong established to provide religious, educational and social services for people of all faiths. While UMAH was founded to primarily serve the Muslim community, the organisation’s mission has expanded to include outreach and programming for the broader Hong Kong population.

 

Project Objectives

 

  • Equip PGDE student interns with practical skills in community education programme management, including social media operation and educational video production tailored for marginalised ethnic minority women.
  • Support UMAH’s ‘Language of Power’ project by completing four Cantonese-rights educational videos and assisting six on-site workshops, thereby enhancing 40 ethnic minority women’s Cantonese proficiency and rights awareness.
  • Help interns develop cultural sensitivity and cross-cultural communication abilities through hands-on collaboration with UMAH’s community service team.

 

Work Details

 

  • Update UMAH’s Facebook, Instagram and official website with project-related content (e.g., women’s workshop highlights, participant stories) 1-2 times daily.
  • Edit short clips (1-2 mins) of on-site workshop activities using basic tools (e.g., CapCut) for social media posting.
  • Compile weekly social media engagement data (likes, comments, shares) and submit a brief feedback report to UMAH’s project team.
  • Assist in on-site workshop logistics (e.g., participant registration, material preparation) when required.

 

Date

 

  • This internship is 12-15 days per student (flexible schedule, primarily weekends/school holidays).
  • Working days: Flexible (primarily weekends and school holidays, aligned with UMAH’s project schedule).
  • Working hours: 2-3 hours per day (remote work: 10:00-12:00 / 14:00-16:00; on-site workshop support: 13:00-17:00, as needed).

 

Location

 

  • Primary location: Work-from-home (remote collaboration via Zoom/WhatsApp)
  • On-site locations: UMAH Office (Room 223, Oi Yee House, Yao Oi Estate, Tuen Mun): 1-2 times per intern (for initial briefing or urgent material preparation).
  • Partner school venues (e.g., Tin Shui Wai District Kindergarten): 1-2 times per intern (for on-site workshop support).
  • Work mode: Mix of remote (work-from-home) and on-site (UMAH office/partner workshop venues) tasks. Stable internet access is required for remote work.

 

Eligibility

 

  • PGDE students majoring in Chinese Language Education, Early Childhood Education (no strict major restriction; students with basic social media skills are welcome).
  • No mandatory certificates required; basic familiarity with social media platforms (Facebook/IG) and simple video editing tools (e.g., CapCut) is preferred.

  • A short paragraph (100-150 words) addressing the following:
    • Your basic understanding of the ethnic minority (EM) situation in Hong Kong. This could cover aspects such as the main ethnic minority groups present, common challenges they face in areas like language access, education and employment, and any prior exposure or knowledge you have about initiatives aimed at supporting them.
    • How your skills and experiences, especially those related to social media management, content creation and community-oriented work, can contribute to our project which focuses on enhancing the rights and opportunities of ethnic minority women in Hong Kong.

 

If your application meets UMAH's requirements, you will be selected for an interview with UMAH. Details regarding the interview are as follows:

 

  • Short-listed candidates will be invited for an interview. The interview will be conducted either in-person at UMAH's office in Tuen Mun or via online video conferencing (Zoom) depending on the candidate's preference and availability.
  • During the interview, UMAH will further assess your understanding of the ethnic minority community in Hong Kong, your enthusiasm for the project, and your ability to handle the tasks assigned, such as updating our Facebook and Instagram pages, editing content for social media, and assisting in on-site workshops. UMAH will also ask about your past experiences in similar projects, if any, and how you would approach potential challenges in this internship.
  • The interview panel will consist of the project director and a representative from the social media team at UMAH. They will evaluate your responses based on your knowledge, skills, and suitability for the role, as well as your cultural sensitivity towards ethnic minority communities.

 

Remarks

 

We expect students to be culturally sensitive (towards ethnic minority communities) and proactive in communicating progress/needs via WhatsApp/email.
