Teaching EFL Writing with AI in a Global Englishes Framework
Date: November 19, 2025 (Wednesday)
Time: 12:45 - 14:00
Venue: Room 401-402, Meng Wah Complex, HKU
Chair: Professor Chun Lai
Abstract:
This talk examines how generative AI tools can be used to support EFL writing instruction in ways that align with a Global Englishes perspective. Rather than reinforcing native-speaker norms, AI can be used to promote multilingual awareness, critical language reflection, and audience-sensitive writing. The presentation explores how students and teachers can engage with AI-generated texts to discuss variation, intelligibility, and rhetorical choice. Practical classroom strategies are offered for integrating AI ethically and critically, helping students become more confident and flexible writers in diverse global contexts.
