Opening Ceremony for the new extension of the Clinic for Speech, Language, Communication, Swallowing and Hearing Disorders MoreClose

The Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences (SHS Division) held the opening ceremony for the newly extended Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic in Kennedy Town on May 17, 2017. The University's Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning), Professor Ian Holliday; the Associate Director of Knowledge Exchange Office, Professor John Bacon-Shone; the Dean of Education, Professor Stephen Andrews; the Dean of Education designate, Professor Lin Goodwin; the Head of SHS Division, Professor Thomas Klee; and the Clinical Education Director, Dr Anita Wong, performed the opening.

The Clinic was established along with the SHS Division in the Faculty in 1988. It provides a state-of-the-art facility for speech therapy and audiology students' clinical education in the SHS Division’s degree programmes. Over 900 students have gained valuable experience in the Clinic becoming qualified speech therapists and audiologists. Clinical services have also been provided to over 5,000 individuals in Hong Kong.

In 2016, financial support was provided from the Faculty to expand the facilities at the Kennedy Town Centre from one floor to two. This extension includes state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment that allows unobtrusive but high-quality recordings to enhance students’ clinical education as well as client service.  At the opening ceremony, the use of the new audio-visual equipment was demonstrated through the live broadcast of a treatment session conducted by the clinical educator, Ms Ada Chu, and her client, Mr Wong.

The Clinic provides diagnostic evaluation, individual and group therapy to individuals with speech, language, communication, swallowing and hearing disorders of all ages and accepts self- and professional referrals.
