Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences
Welcome! The Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences (SHS) is dedicated to training Speech Therapists and Audiologists who serve the local community. The Division, established in 1988, was the first university training programme for speech-language therapy and audiology in Hong Kong and China. The Division’s Speech, Language and Hearing (SLH) Clinic in Kennedy Town provides the local community with quality speech therapy and audiological services that meet the unique communication needs of clients and their families.
The mission of the Division of SHS is:
- To improve and maximise the communication skills of people with communication disorders
- To provide high-quality assessments, treatment and consultation to individuals with communication and swallowing disorders
- To strengthen the interaction skills of the communication partners of clients
- To increase public awareness of and advocacy for communication disorders.
The Division of SHS offers the following degree programmes:
- Bachelor of Science in Speech and Hearing Sciences [BSc(SPEECH)]
- Master of Science in Audiology [MSc(Audiology)]
- Research Postgraduate degrees [MPhil, PhD, and EdD]

The Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences provides professional training for university students who aspire to become Speech Therapists and Audiologists. Until the first graduates completed the degree programme in 1992, speech therapists who practiced in Hong Kong obtained an overseas qualification. The Division teaches a five-year Bachelor of Science degree, with honours, in Speech and Hearing Sciences, which also confers an internationally recognised professional qualification. The Division also teaches a Master of Science degree in Audiology, as well as offers research postgraduate degrees (MPhil, PhD, and EdD). The Division has successfully trained more than 800 qualified speech therapists since 1988 and over 80 qualified audiologists since 1998.

The Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences (SHS) comprises specialists in typical and disordered human communication, hearing and swallowing in children and adults.
Members of the Division conduct research in a wide-range of areas, including speech and language processing, auditory and speech perception, and psycholinguistics across a range of communication disorders, including voice disorders, motor speech disorders, developmental speech and language disorders, neurogenic disorders, literacy, and hearing disorders. Research is also conducted on normal language processing of children and adults. The Division’s research has often led to new tools that support speech and hearing professionals in their clinical work with adult and child clients.

The Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences is dedicated to conducting innovative research in human communication sciences and disorders that has both local and international impact. Colleagues translate their research into practice by providing training and workshops to children, parents, teachers, and clinicians in Hong Kong and elsewhere. The Division’s provides the local community with quality speech therapy services and audiological services that meet the unique communication needs of clients and their families.
In addition, many research projects done in the Division are directly focused on improving the quality of life of individuals in Hong Kong with communication disorders. Kennedy Town Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic
The Speech, Language and Hearing (SLH) Clinic in Kennedy Town provides the local community with quality speech therapy and audiological services that meet the unique communication needs of clients and their families. It also provides supervised clinical training to students who are studying to become speech therapists and audiologists.
At the SLH Clinic, the clinical and support services are offered by clinical faculty members and students. Specialist clinics are operated by the Division’s clinical faculty members who are highly experienced in the field. Student clinicians serve under the supervision of clinical faculty members in student clinics to provide diagnostic evaluations and therapy to clients of all ages.
