Bachelor of Education in Language Education (Primary English)

Programme Overview

The Faculty of Education offers a 4-year degree in Language Education for applicants wishing to become teachers of English in primary schools.

The BEd(Eng) programme provides the academic and professional foundation to become an English teacher in primary schools. The 4-year programme addresses the following areas:

  • English language and linguistics;
  • the development of young learners;
  • teaching and learning English (ESL / EAL / EFL) in the primary school;
  • primary education and English language learning in society;
  • managing learners and learning;
  • special needs and gifted education; and
  • personal and professional development.
Programme Features

The programme also includes:

  • an overseas language and cultural immersion programme in an English-speaking country;
  • school experience in local primary schools throughout the programme;
  • pedagogy courses to equip students with learning skills; and
  • a classroom research project in the 4th year of study.

Professional Recognition

The BEd(Eng) programme meets the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) requirements for English teachers:

  • a first degree majoring in English;
  • a recognised teacher training qualification majoring in English; and
  • benchmark Language Proficiency Assessment for Teachers (English Language).
Career Prospects

The BEd(Eng) programme fully qualifies students for careers in:

  • teaching English Language in Hong Kong primary schools;
  • teaching ESL, EAL or EFL in international primary schools and overseas;
  • curriculum development or quality assurance in Government;
  • textbook writing and editing in publishing companies.

How to Apply

JUPAS candidates :

Secondary 7 students doing HKALE should apply through the Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS) using Programme Code 6133.

Non-JUPAS candidates :

Candidates from international schools, associate degrees, higher diplomas, overseas or mature applicants may apply directly to the University (Non-JUPAS) via the on-line application system at: http://www.als.hku.hk/admission/applying-or-admission-info/hong-kong-students/non-jupas. On the same website, see admission requirements from other examination systems, e.g. UK, USA, Canada, Australia or International Baccalaureate.

Scholarships

The Scholarship for Prospective English Teachers, recently set up by the Education Bureau of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, is available for applications by students who are admitted in 2012-13 and satisfy the stipulated English requirement, from the end of July to early August 2012.
