No. 4 in the world - THE World University Rankings by Subject 2018
We are very pleased to share with you that we have been ranked number 4 among the top Education faculties worldwide by the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings for Education 2018.
Having previously grouped under the subject “Social Sciences”, it is the first time that “Education” forms a separate subject ranking. Apart from the Faculty of Education at HKU, the top five universities for Education in this year’s exercise are: 1) Stanford University, 2) Harvard University, 3) the University of Oxford, and 5) the University of California, Berkeley.
The subject areas used to create this ranking are Education, Teacher Training, and Academic Studies in Education. THE uses 13 performance indicators which are grouped into five areas for its ranking system – Teaching (the learning environment), Research (volume, income and reputation), Citations (research influence), International outlook (staff, students and research), and Industry income (Innovation). The relative weightings of these criteria vary slightly from discipline to discipline. For Education, the weightings are 32.7% Teaching, 29.8% Research, 27.5% Citations, 7.5% International outlook, and 2.5% Industry income. We are delighted to see that we have obtained the high indicative score of 86.5.

We are very encouraged by this positive outcome which is a testament to the hard work of our colleagues, our former Dean Professor Stephen Andrews, our students and our alumni. In an increasingly competitive higher education landscape, we strive continually to enhance the impact of our scholarship, the quality of the student experience, and our local and international engagement.
