Introduction

Business process management (BPM) is increasingly being recognized as a critical factor in business success. BPM helps to improve business processes, reduces operational costs, and promotes real-time visibility in business performance. In recent years, business environments have been changing from centralized-and-closed to distributed-and-open. Business processes are becoming increasingly complex and dynamic as they seek to cope with a wide range of internal and external interactions and changes. Traditional approaches to process management are often inadequate for complex and dynamic situations due to their lack of flexibility and adaptability.

Against this background, business process flexibility and adaptability at an operational and strategic level has shown its significance, with a view to managing dynamic changes as well as fostering flexible interactions within and between organizations. Given the limitation of traditional approaches to business process management, we are facing challenges and chances to further enhance business processes in the following aspects:

Dealing with increased changes arising from turbulent environments

Managing complex and interactive processes across multiple organizations

Integrating organizational and managerial perspectives into process management

Creating and maintaining the fit between business processes and supporting approaches

The Handbook of Research on Complex Dynamic Process Management: Techniques for Adaptability in Turbulent Environments aims to provide a systematic understanding on and investigations into the complex and dynamic business processes with advanced approaches to managing the processes. This Handbook of Research will address various issues, trends, opportunities, and problems faced by researchers and practitioners in complex and dynamic process environments, followed by principles, approaches and tools developed for solving the problems as well as their applications in practical situations. The book will be a compilation of contributed chapters based on experiences, knowledge, and research and practical findings of experts working in business process and workflow management and other related fields.

OBJECTIVES
Recognizing the dynamic nature of business processes, researchers are paying increased attention to adaptive approaches and technologies for managing complex processes in increasingly turbulent environments. This book introduces recent investigations and findings in this area, including various understandings, analyses, strategies, architectures, methodologies and techniques for developing adaptive approaches to business process management. Moreover, the book aims to fill the gap between practical requirements and supporting approaches. It will benefit professionals, researchers, and practitioners with advanced analysis, approaches, and practical implications in this field. The book may also provide insights and support executives concerned with organizational strategic development via adaptive process management in today’s turbulent environments.

TARGET AUDIENCE
The book is intended for professionals, practitioners, executives, researchers, PhD students, and graduate students working in the field of business process and workflow management from various disciplines, e.g. information technology, industrial engineering, management information systems, organizational management, electronic commerce/business, supply chain management, customer relationship management, etc.

Authors are invited to submit their book chapter proposals by January 05, 2008, as a 2-5 page manuscript proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of the proposed chapter via e-mail to Maggie Minhong Wang (magwang@hku.hk), editor.

Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by January 31, 2008 about the status of their proposals and will receive the guidelines for preparing the chapter and terms and definitions.

The authors of accepted proposals will have to submit the final chapter by May 15, 2008. Chapters, consisting of 8,000-10,000 words (including 7-10 related terms and their appropriate definitions), should be original and should not have been submitted for publication or published elsewhere. Guidelines for preparing for the book chapters and terms and definitions will be sent to the author upon acceptance of the proposal. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis.
